New Memoir Chronicles History of Cape Charles through the Eyes of a Child

Pleasant Living Books of Kilmarnock, Virginia, is pleased to announce the release of a new historical memoir, Portrait of a Town: Cape Charles, 1940 – 1960. Through a collection of true vignettes, author Patricia Joyce Parsons conjures the beauty and past of the coastal town she calls home. Starting with the early years of America’s involvement with World War II, Parsons invites readers to explore the swamps and island barriers where she played as a child and to hear the train whistle rise up over Virginia’s Eastern Shore at a time when her home was becoming a stomping ground for wartime efforts and nearby naval shipyards. More than a story of the author’s childhood, Portrait of a Town chronicles one town’s struggle to maintain its rural character and way of life during a transformative period in American history.

Patricia Joyce Parsons left Cape Charles when the town began to dwindle in the post-war period, only to return years later. Upon her arrival, she realized she had a story to share. Pat considers herself an accidental author. She first wrote a memoir about her family, and then stumbled across a story far larger. Portrait of a Town: Cape Charles, 1940 – 1960 became a reality through current residents in Cape Charles, and her vivid memories depicting the daily life of the town from her fresh perspective.

Today, Cape Charles still calls to visitors willing to stop and listen for the railroad’s whistle. It lives on as a revitalized family tourist destination offering up coastal waters and scenery as well as hundreds of stories carried in the hearts of residents like Parsons. The book will be launched Friday, Jume 12 at the Cape Charles Coffee House beginning at 5 p.m. Pat will be on hand to answer questions and autograph the books.

Pleasant Living Books is an imprint of Pleasant Living Magazine, a publication that has served the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s River Country since 1989.
